What is Dumnonian Husbandry?
Dumnonian husbandry is named for the British kingdom that existed in Devon and Cornwall from before the Romans came to the battle of Hastings. The territory of the Dumnonii. While Devon had, by the 9th century, been politically incorporated into the Kingdom of Wessex it remained distinct from the English kingdoms to its east. These distinctions persisted over the centuries and by the 18th century were most evident in the rural society, diet and farming practices of the people west of the river Axe. These differences drew the attention of many writers in agricultural and topographical matters and even Oliver Cromwell was reported to have said “I have been in all the counties of England and I think the husbandry of Devonshire to be the best”. Most of these peculiarities have since been lost.
